Abstract/Description: The author reports the passing of Frederick “Fred” Davis Greene II on March 22, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on July 7, 1927, he received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1952 with Paul D. Bartlett. After a brief stay at UCLA with Donald J. Cram, Fred was brought to MIT in 1953 by then-Department Head Arthur C. Cope. Fred enjoyed a prosperous relationship with MIT for more than 70 years. It is from his role as editor in chief of The Journal of Organic Chemistry (JOC) from 1962 to 1988 that this essay takes its roots.
