Abstract/Description: Chemistry in the mid-18th century was well represented by the work of Macquer. The two great works of this central French chemist are discussed in detail: Elements of the Theory and Practice of Chymistry (1758) and Dictionary of Chemistry (1771), originally published as Dictionnaire de Chymie (1766). While Macquer remained a proponent of the phlogistic theory of chemistry, he united the actual discussion of real phenomena by his entries in his Dictionnaire.
