DEXTER AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN THE HISTORY OF CHEMISTRY
- The award recognized an outstanding career of contributions to the history of chemistry.
- The award consisted of a monetary award and a plaque.
- The award was international in scope, and was presented annually at the fall national ACS meeting.
- The Dexter Award for Outstanding Achievement in the History of Chemistry was established in 1956 and ended in 2001.
It was sponsored by the Dexter Chemical Corporation (1956-1999), and by the Mildred and Sidney Edelstein Foundation (2000-2001). Sidney Edelstein founded the Dexter Chemical Corporation of New York in 1945. He was an extremely active HIST member, being Secretary/Treasurer from 1948 - 1965. For more information on Dr. Edestein, see the Sidney M. Edelstein Center for the History and Philosophy of Science, Technology and Medicine - Founder and Biographical Information on Sidney M. Edelstein. In 2002, the award was re-named the Sidney M. Edelstein Award for Outstanding Acheivement in the History of Chemistry and sponsored by Ruth E. [Edelstein] Barish and the Chemical Heritage Foundation with additional support from HIST.
